Summer Schools

HEFCE/ESF Summer Schools are part of the government initiative to widen and increase access to Higher Education (HE) for students from under represented groups. Over the past four years the region has supported over 3800 pupils in Year 10, 11 and 12 to participate in this initiative.

Summer Schools are targeted at pupils with no previous parental background in HE and those who are expected to achieve good A Level qualifications, or equivalent, but are unsure about whether to continue in education. Applications are also encouraged from pupils who may have specific learning difficulties, are disaffected at school, in care or from ethnic minority groups. New guidance relating to eligibility criteria is available for teachers.

The Summer School experience allows pupils to gain a taste of HE. The experience is varied and includes team working exercises, meeting top graduate employers, learning about the variety of subject options available and the social aspects of living away from home. Overall, it gives pupils the opportunity to identify if attending university is an option for them in the future and to encourage those who have not yet decided to Aimhigher and reach for their potential!
