Apprenticesgohigher
The Apprenticesgohigher project aims to determine progression routes for apprentices, and to explore learner support.
The project is led by Wakefield College and works in partnership with universities, colleges, employers and training providers within West Yorkshire. It looks at ways of targeting and supporting under-represented groups. The project aims to change perceptions about work-based learning to gain parity of esteem with the academic route. It does this by showing parents, and school teachers and pupils that it is often a better route to Higher Education because of the transferable skills that are gained and because young people can 'earn while they learn'.
Further information, and case studies of young people who have progressed from an Apprenticeship to Higher Education, can be found on the project’s website at www.apprenticesgohigher.org.
This year the site has been further developed to provide information across Yorkshire and the Humber. The new site can be accessed via the local link, or directly via www.apprentice-forward.org.uk.
It has been designed by Aimhigher South Yorkshire and Aimhigher West Yorkshire and provides dedicated sections for young people, parents, apprentices and employers. The information is supported by case studies, including video clips showing young people who have progressed to higher education from an apprenticeship. A major feature is a fully searchable database of higher level courses available in the region for those who have followed a vocational or work-based learning route. The website is still under development, so if you have any comments or suggestions please forward these to David Berry (d.berry@shu.ac.uk) or Dave Fisher, (d.fisher@wakefield.ac.uk)
